I dress like a scrub 99% of the time. That’s not an exaggeration. I wouldn’t have it any other way. What most people don’t know about me is that I choose to dress this way for three specific reasons.
Comfort Equals Confidence
It’s almost guaranteed if you see me on the street running errands, out at dinner, or come to visit me at my house I’m wearing a cotton blend work t-shirt, athletic shorts, black high socks, and Reebok shoes that are ALWAYS un-tied. I joke with my wife that I couldn’t ever go back to Corporate America and have to dress up every day. I’ve come to the realization that my amazing stature wasn’t made for suits.
The truth is I found when I wear clothes that don’t feel comfortable on me not only do I get annoyed by what I’m wearing I begin to feel insecure because I feel others sense I’m being fake trying to wear something that I wouldn’t wear otherwise. The irony is that by dressing in scrubby athletic attire I have more confidence not less.
More Brain Power
It’s been reported that Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett were notorious for wearing the same outfit days on end. By no means am I comparing myself to them but I can definitely relate to why they chose to do so.
By reducing the number of decisions they make each day, like what to wear, they are able to free up brain power for more important thoughts and decisions. I go as far as to set my clothes up the night before so its one less choice I have to make early in the morning. I don’t have the brain power, nor care to find outfits to wear on a daily basis. I would rather waste my energy or more important things.
First Impression Fakeout
You can tell a lot about a person in the first few seconds when they look at how I’m dressed. For those who think they are a better human being than me by the clothes they are wearing, I usually get a funny look or complete lack of attention. These people make my life easier because they save me the energy of trying to see if they were worth getting to know. Don’t these people know that there is nothing you can wear that will make you a better person? Regardless of how expensive their suit is.
Who you are as a person comes from the inside out, not the outside in. If you judge me by the clothes I wear I can’t be your friend. Thank you for making the decision for me.
