Self Awareness As A Commodity

In the traditional sense a commodity is a tangible product or raw material. Very rarely is commodity addressed as abstract as time.

At a recent conference Gary Vaynerchuk addressed an audience for over in hour with Q&A only. The last question of the evening to me was the most profound.

The lady in the audience asked, “what is the ROI on not giving a F#%! and being unapologetically yourself?”

His immediate answer was, “speed”. He continued, “when you’re not spending time worrying, you’re spending time executing… Speed is the game in what we all do for a living. And if you’re not worrying about what people think you are in execution mode. I do everything in my power to put myself in full execution mode all the time.”

For the first time, I could use an abstract concept life self-awareness as a metric for improving my business. It is clear to me now that those who spend time on the “defense” are more caught up on the worry factor, than the “offense” where execution is the name of the game.

I believe the future of leadership will be placed not on the individual who is the smartest, rather, he or she that has a higher EQ (emotional quotient). These individuals are more capable of managing emotions like worry while still remaining flexible, always directing their behavior in a positive way.

Lastly, the thing I admire about Gary is that he uses self-awareness more as a marker for success than he does a high SAT score. He understands that he’s different. His authenticy is evident from the moment you hear him speak. He remains present in conversation and never holds anything back. This is a level of self-awareness I still yet to see in the marketplace among top leaders.

This has nothing to do with IQ and everything to do with EQ.
