Never, Never, Never Give Up: A Lesson Learned Lifting An Unbearable Load

“The secret of our success is that we never, never give up”

I was completely exhausted. I had just finished a CrossFit superset workout of dumbbell squats and burpees that took me about 7 minutes to complete without stopping. I had four minutes left in the workout to squat clean as much weight off the floor as possible. I was attempting to lift 285lbs to my shoulders starting from the ground.

I strapped up my wrist wraps, strapped up my belt and went for it. As I began to pull the bar off the ground, I was able to get underneath it much quicker than I thought  There was only one problem… the workout before that had crushed my legs. There was a moment of hesitation as the bar landed on my shoulders. I wasn’t positive that I was going to be able to stand up to the weight.

It felt so heavy that it brought me forward. My right foot got ahead of me as I tried to stand up. In that instant, I was sure I wouldn’t be able to regain my balance. I paused myself in the staggered position with 285lbs on my shoulders. I could hear everyone yelling. “Get up,” “Go Mario!!” ..the rest was a blur.

In a desperate last effort contraction, I was able to stand up with the weight. As soon as I stood up the applauses ensued.

Never, never, never give up, otherwise, you’ll never know what you’re really made of.
