If it were easy, everyone would do it.

Sometimes we forget how different we train from most until we hang out with people who don't train like us. Just the other day, I was questioned by a client about my training philosophy. "Everything you're telling me right now is the opposite of what I've been told." "I hate you right now," she said out of breath. "Everything you're telling me right now is the opposite of what I've been told." Her comment wasn't made condescendingly. What I was doing was forcing her to rethink everything she thought about fitness, and what it meant to train like an athlete. By [...]

I never aspired to be a gym owner

2019-05-07T11:26:18+00:00

October 10, 2010, was the day I legally became a business owner. That was the day I officially filed CrossFit Naples as an LLC. This is embarrassing to admit, but sometimes, I will park my car in the parking lot of the first location where I opened my gym and reflect on all the great memories as well as the difficulties I faced as a new business owner. I couldn't have imagined then that I would be running a gym full-time almost nine years later. You might be surprised to hear this, but I never aspired to be a gym owner. [...]

It’s Never Been About Being The Best

2019-03-05T12:43:27+00:00

The 2019 CrossFit Games Open series is officially underway! And if there's one thing the CrossFit Open is showing the 46 participants who registered at our gym is that we can ALWAYS improve. In the first Open workout, we were asked to perform a grueling 15-minute circuit of wall-ball shots and rowing. Although the movements didn't require a lot of skill, the simplicity of the workout didn't allow for much rest. To me, this workout was a test of mental toughness. The goal of the Open has always been to EXPOSE WEAKNESSES. In the second Open workout that we completed this [...]

The Difference Between Amateurs and Professionals In Life

2018-01-17T23:35:04+00:00

“Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.” I have to admit I'm getting excited and anxious about starting my last semester of my graduate degree. I'm excited because it's my LAST semester but anxious because I don't know how I'm going to find the time of day to study with all the other obligations I currently have as a husband, father, coach and business owner. I've had almost an entire month off for winter break, and I haven't slowed down. I put in just as many hours working during the break as [...]

Did you wake up with Post-Thanksgiving Blues

2017-11-24T19:53:18+00:00

"Negative emotions like guilt have an essential role to play in a happy life; they’re big, flashing signs that something needs to change.” Let me ask you: Did you wake up with the Post-Thanksgiving blues? Did you overeat and hate yourself for it? Did you tell yourself you were going to limit how much you ate but didn’t? Did you say you were going to get up in the morning to workout but slept in instead? Guilt is a fascinating emotion that scientist are just now beginning to understand. Scientists believe that the feeling of guilt has the power to regulate social behavior. [...]
