What Is Your Defining Moment? This is Mine…

Everyone, whether they realize it or not, has a few defining moments in their life that they'll never forget. This one is mine. I was encouraged by a good friend to spend the summer in Colorado with him and his college friends as a camp counselor. At first, I was very hesitant, not only did I have to apply for this position in which I had no experience, I had to stop everything I was doing for 3 months. What was I going to do with all my belongings if I got the position? How was I going to pay to get [...]

The Struggle Is What Makes It Great

The struggle is what makes it great. That was my encouragement to my members this morning after a 5:30am class that involved a grueling 40 minute workout. In fitness, this oxymoron is understood and encouraged. You can't grow physically unless you beat it up. Without this struggle there would be no growth, no progress, no change. This isn't a limitation of getting in shape. We find this in life aswell. It's inevitable that things happen in your life that you wish didn't. I think where things get sour is when we believe life should be perfect but as we've all come [...]

Anyone can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad

My dad spent 13 years in prison. He’s not in jail anymore and nobody really knows what he’s up to. Very seldom do I think about my dad but lately as I’ve had many conversations about me as a father I can’t help but think about him. At 18 years old with two more years to serve I went to see my dad by myself. His English isn’t that good so before I went I wrote my thoughts and feelings about him in Spanish. I can’t remember everything I told him but it was something to the extent of how hurt [...]

What Socrates Can Teach You About Creating An Amazing Culture

In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who ran up to him excitedly and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?" "Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me, I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Test of Three." "Three?" "That's right, Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to test what you're going to say. The first test is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that [...]

The Phantom Cry Got Me Good

I never understood why my mom was so worried about me all the time until I had Liam. At night is the worst. I haven't fallen into a deep sleep since he's been born. I check him every five minutes to make sure he's still breathing. This is so not me. I'm a serenity prayer kind of guy. I don't worry much because I know I can't control or plan everything that happens in life. Rarely do I let emotions get the best of me. All that has been thrown out the window from the moment I met him. He was [...]

What Fatherhood Can Teach You About the Importance of Fitness

The moment I walked out of the hospital after Liam was born my life felt different. It’s difficult to describe in words. The best way to describe it is like starting life over with a fresh pair of eyes. As I started driving home I began to recognize businesses in retail plaza’s I’ve never noticed. I slowed down, instead of speeding up towards a yellow light. Everything looked and felt new again. It’s one thing to be responsible for taking care of yourself but the moment I realized that Liam depends 100% on me and my wife to survive I’ve never been the same. [...]

3 Points to Consider With a Solid Rack Postion

This is one major topic I'm most confident about, not only because I perform the movement very well but also due to the fact that I have seen it done wrong so many times. The conversation of a proper rack set up is a major area of focus in our facility. We highly encourage our new members to develop this skill from day one. Being that we use the barbell on a weekly basis it's paramount that our athletes learn this setup as quickly as possible. First and foremost, we help our clients understand this set-up by defining what a rack [...]

What failure, hardwork, and determination taught me about myself…

I dropped out of college when I was 18 years old. I moved to Texas to live with my uncle and worked at Walmart. I joined the military and was discharged for medical reasons. I came back home with nothing to show for it. I started cleaning pools and coaching wrestling. It was there I learned the power of the title “coach”. Now 22 years old, I had kids 16-18 years old looking up to me. I couldn’t screw this up. Having those kids look up to me wanted me to be better. Robert Bowe, the head wrestling coach at the time [...]

Coaching Has More To Do With Communication Skills Than How Much You Can Lift

Before you get mad at me for stating communication skills are more important to coaching than a coaches experience let me explain... At our gym a few weeks ago, we presented a new way of displaying our workouts to our members. It has 3 different tracks; Health, Fitness, Performance. This is already being done with some of the best CrossFit gyms in the world. If done correctly 70% of our members will fall in the middle (Fitness) track. I won't discuss the philosophy of the training style her but understand the benefits outweigh the cons. Though, we had been working on [...]
